Zakopane some facts on history
The history of Zakopane goes back some 400 years. However, the beginnings of this place are not exactely known. It appears to have come into being when the seasonal shepherds settlements became transformed into permanent abodes. It is understood that the Settlement prerogative ( missing ) was issued by King Stefan Batory in 1578. And the name? It appears for the first time in documents in 1605 and most likely it has its origin in the Polish word "kopane" ("zakopane"), witch once meant the area grubbed up for glade. Zakopane's career as a resort and holiday centre began in the second half of the19th century.

Tatra mountains
Zakopane would certainly not be what it is if it was not so close to the Tatra which many consider the most beautiful mountains in the world. The Tatra Mountains are located in the middle of the massive arch of the Carpatians, the mountains which spread over a distance of more than a thousand kilometres and pass through a few Slavic countries. The Tatra are the highest part of the Carpathian arch.

Hiking equipment
Hiking trips in the upper parts of the Tatra Mountains require strong colthing. At the same time, you clothing must fit you well and protect you from wind and cold. The good shoes will have ancles and a wibram-type soil. Fashionable running or tennis shoes are very comfortable. However, they are not safe in high mountains and therefore not recommended.

Weather in Zakopane
Weather or not your stay in Zakopane will be a success depends largely upon weather conditions. The old gorals (i.e. mountaineers) say that the Winter is here for 10 months and the rest is the Summer. However, it may not be as optimistic as they say. The climat in Zakopane and the Tatra Mountains is determined by their geographic posision in the Central Europe ( where dominate west winds carring masses of cold air) and by the area relief. Because of the latter, if you hike in the Tatra Mountains, you may experience all four seasons in one day from Summer to Winter.

The foehn wind
The Foehn is very strong and impetuous but, also dry and warn wind. It usually causes the quick metling of the snow and the rapid thaws. In the Spring it quickens plant vegetation. However, it acts in a very unfavorable way on the human organism. In some people it causes sleepiness and the prolongation of the response time; in others, excitability and nervousness. People who normally suffer because of lung and heart troubles, suffer even more.

Places to visit
Many guests to Zakopane limit their visit to walking on the town main streets. We are not going to discourage you from everyday visits to Krupowki Street or to the areas of Gubalowka and Krokiew. Churches
Zakopane is devides into several parishes. There are over 30 churches, chapels and monasteries. On your hiking trip, you may find many little traditional rural shrines. Most of these objects have very inspiring old or modern designs. Their interior has often beendecorated by folk artisans or outstanding artists.

Going to trips to the Tatra Mountains in the Winter you need to know of the dangers which are much more imminent than in the summer. The gravest threats are avalanches, sudden and violent weather changes, low temperatures, frequent routes freezing and bad visibility. In a foggy weather or in heavy snow one can easily lose direction in the mountains.
